a TEMPLE

initiation

The Retreat

relatable, educational, human. and a little bit woo-woo infused.

A Temple Initiation retreat is for the temple newbie (or beginner mindset lover) who is ready to step out of autopilot and into their realest version yet. You are guided to explore your capacity for authentic expression, connection and pleasure. Feel what it is like when you can bring all of your messy human-ness and allow the intimacy to expand you.

Has the world of temple seemed a little bit too intense or edgy for you?

A common approach is to go right IN but at this retreat we vibe differently: this is a slow burn -  no intense catharsis for hours or forcefully running into your edges. We go at a pace that allows you to stay embodied as much as possible and hence actually meet your depth, rather than feeling like you are floating on another plane of existence and being busy catching up with your reality. I personally believe in the power of slowness, think of a bud that softly cracks open when it is ready to bloom.

Join this five day indulgence of feeling deeply, getting real, embodied learning and playful rituals. At A Temple Initiation we put pleasure and pain and all the juiciness in between at the altar of life.

Back to the basics.

  • Body awareness

Learning what it is like to be in your body and tuning into all its tiny whispers and shouts.

  • Embodiment

Dropping out of your head and getting used to feeling and expressing through your body (magic lives here).

  • Consent and Touch Education

Discovering all the fundamental things we should have learnt before we started relating intimately with humans.

  • Shadow Work

Uncovering the parts of you that you have (maybe unconsciously) tucked away and inviting them to the party - most of the time they come as uninvited guests anyways.

  • Sensuality and eros

Allowing your erotic essence as a natural part of your human-ness and exploring the path of liberated and unshamed pleasure.

  • Ritual

Sprinkling magic into the mundane and infusing a little bit of woo-woo to turn ordinary moments into juicy, meaningful experiences.

my little musings on what a (beginners) temple is all about.

A temple is an embodied ritual space to explore your inner and relational landscape. Think of it as a space to shed the layers of who society told you to be. It is a playground for self-discovery, where you can figure out how you really want to move through the world and what authentic expression feels like in your bones.

My friend Robbie once said that temples either show you what is love or what is in the way of love. I love looking at temple that way.

Maybe you have done years of therapy, analysed all the corners of your psyche, meditated until your mind felt like a blank slate, and felt like you figured it all out. Ram Dass said ‘if you think you are enlightened, go spend a week with your family’.

That is the thing about connection - it shows you the truth of where you are. Temple is a tool for you to experience that very vulnerable truth in an embodied way, almost like holding a magnifying glass to the things you need to see (or look at again and again and again) and humbly put all your lessons into practice.

The real power of temple lies in its group space. It is like a hall of mirrors, offering reflections from every interaction and encounter. You will see parts of yourself you have never met, uncover edges you didn’t know existed, and find chaos of emotions and experiences. Temples can be so messy and awkward too - and we totally embrace that because isn’t just that a reflection of life?

Temple is about embracing your full range of human-ness. And yes, part of that is your erotic body (spoiler: this is a non-penetrative retreat). In this retreat we really mean when we say “all of you is welcome” and don’t shame what is so innate for us.

The erotic body is often the entry to the profound parts of how you function and relate and in temple you can harness it. You may smash through conditioning and practice mastering the art of dropping agendas by following what is actually alive for you.

You are constantly encouraged to stay with your personal fuckyes, honoring your level of intensity and involvement. You will never be asked to disregard your needs or silence your boundaries.

Sometimes temple is deeply transformational and challenging, and sometimes it is a place to revel in pleasure and have a deliciously expansive time.

It can be all of that, and it is up to you how you create your own experience (and spoiler #2 every temple has its own current - imagine yourself navigating your own boat whilst being carried along by the natural flow of the river, trust your ability to be in the unknown baby).

WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY GETTING UP TO?

  • day 1: landing

Take your time to get cozy in your new nest and meet your roomies. What is left of the day is about beginning to lean in. We are opening the retreat container and going over the temple agreements (find them below). In our first temple of the retreat you will experience how to find safety within and without.

  • day 2: The Emotional Body

Get ready to let your feels gently wash over you. This is the time to stop being afraid of your emotions, we journey into the dark corners of the heart. We dive into rituals and practices designed to bring what wants to be acknowledged to the surface. There is the invitation to let the group body hold you and witness you in your emotional truth. We are handing out permission slips to fall apart if you want to, at the end of the day, we will stitch you back together.

  • day 3: The Erotic Body

Now that we know how to feel, it is pleasure time, baby! You will learn how to open your vertical pleasure body early in the morning already. You may deepen your understanding of consent and boundaries with all its nuances, including the wide spectrum of desires. There will be touch education, so you can become your own (and someone else’s) best lover. We will offer some body work, with the intention to empower you to connect with your body and pleasure in a way that feels like your fuckyes. You can put all of these new lessons to practice in the temple which will give you an opportunity to reach new levels of deliciousness.

  • day 4: The Shadow Body

Our erotic body is often the gateway to the unseen: time to dive into the parts of yourself you would rather like to keep hidden - the really uncomfortable stuff - YAY! This work can feel edgy, but it is incredibly liberating. And there is a whole group functioning as a net you can fall into. If the land allows (we have a responsibility to protect Portuguese lands from fire depending on the weather), we will burn some of the shit we have been carrying around with us. Don’t worry, we will turn the ashes into something truly exhilarating, just like a phoenix, and end the day with an ecstatic dance and nourishing temple.

  • day 5: Integration

Phew, at this point we have been through a journey! The hour has come to be super duper wholesome, bathe in love and close with Lisbon Temple Nights signature retreat ritual (The Walk of Pleasure IYKYK). It will be time to pack up your nest, say your Até Breve’s and we will send you off with a renewed sense of self by the early afternoon.

lead Facilitator

Marry’s (they/she) zone of genius is to create relatable and grounded spaces for erotic intimacy away from any spiritual dogmas. Marry knows how to create such slowness that especially people who are new to this world, feel open to drop in, sometimes for the first time in their life. Their focus lies on working with the very human parts, the personal. They hold people's hands while they find their authentic expression and love them through the shame and shadows that come up. Marry isn’t afraid of the complexity and polarity this work often brings: fragility and power aren’t contradicting but co-existing in their spaces. Living life as a queer neurodivergent human, Marry is a big advocate for the awkwardness and messiness of life.

If you are really into professional facts, here are some: Marry works mostly as a sex educator. They have been trained as a relationship and sex therapist as well as a tantra teacher. They have been through a few different temple trainings, founded Lisbon Temple Nights three years ago and have facilitated 100+ temples and workshops.

  • MY PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH TEMPLE AND WHY I WANT THIS RETREAT TO EXIST IN THE WORLD

  • I was raised as a super sensitive little cancer soul. I have always been in touch with my emotions. I spent the majority of my twenties in either spiritual settings such as meditating with monks and nuns in a Buddhist temple/monastery in Myanmar, or in Berlin’s dark and dirty sex positive underworld such as riding on a strangers back with him naked on all fours pretending be a horse, through all the dancefloors this club had to offer.

Here I was ‘knowing’ how to feel, be spiritual and play and fuck - all of that felt disconnected and somehow not fulfilling at all.

  • Then I found temple. Not the ones I knew but a different one. One moment I witnessed a woman punching a man’s chest letting out her rage, the next I saw a few people crying deeply and praying “for the world” (back then I was like wtf? but now I understand actually), other moments the group dissolved into a big pile of tongues and hands exploring bodies, there were people crying, moaning, being still.

And yeh - then there was also that moment when I was non-consensually choked unconscious and when I came back to my senses, I cried and he licked away my tears. There was so much WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK in that experience and I have to admit I liked it, all of it. This was the beginning of a journey that has burnt so many of my parts down, birthed new, brought love to the unloved, uncovered the unseen, tore me apart…

And not often stitched me back together.

  • In the beginning I often had the same observation: many spaces went too radical, too intense, too fast from the very start and lost me. I was too busy protecting myself because my survival mechanisms were activated.

But I held on over and over again.

Even though my resilience allowed me to plow through the wounds, trauma and shadows that were arising for me in those temples, I was desiring this framework, just a bit softer, slower, more gentle, a little bit more grounded and relatable. I knew many people who didn’t hold on and dismissed the whole temple thing, maybe even came out scarred.

I grieve this deeply today because I believe so much in the concept of temple- I believe it is peacework, inner and outer. And how many people were lost to do this powerful work and/or were hurt because they weren’t initiated in a sustainable way.

  • This isn’t to shame or blame any facilitators and institutions who choose a more radical approach, this is how I found out what I want my service to the world to look and feel like.

Going back to the analogy of how temple is about stirring your own boat with the natural current of the river: some of us master stirring the boat in really rough, wild waters and some of us capsize when the smallest wave hits - and there is no judgement in either of that.

Turns out, I love supporting people in building the muscle in calm waters to eventually be able to navigate rip currents and monster waves if they want to ride their boat in those.

  • And if this analogy isn’t clear enough: I don’t believe we need forced intensity to grow, I believe in creating a setting that follows the innate intelligence of timings in our systems which allows us to feel and integrate as much as possible in real time.

This is why I have turned to building bridges, creating beginner spaces, slow and soft settings, creating the A Temple Initiation retreat.

All that to say that this isn’t going to be exclusively comfortable, temple is deep shadow work and that can sometimes still split you wide open.

THE TEMPLE AGREEMENTS short and sweet-ish

  • I always have a choice. I decide how much involvement and intensity feels appropriate for me at any given moment. I can change my mind any time.

I am responsible to listen to my needs and boundaries. I have the power to create the experience that feels right for me. I take space when I need it and I ask for support when necessary.

If I am partnered in any way, I ask for needs and boundaries before I enter the temple and communicate transparently and honestly about my experiences afterwards.

  • I consider and care for the humans I share the space with. I show up with my heart in the temple rather than seeking transactional experiences. I act in synergy with the group

Every single interaction is based on ongoing enthusiastic consent. I do this in my own body as well as with the bodies I am with. “No” is a full sentence and no explanation or justification is needed.

The temple excludes all genital nudity and stimulation, this includes self pleasure.

When I tell other people about the temple, I only tell them about my experiences, not those of others. I respect the identities and names not leaving the temple.

  • I am aware that I contribute to the vibe in the temple and co-create the experience.

I listen to my body and my heart. I am willing to say yes to meeting my edges, daring to meet myself new.

I am open to surrender to the mystery and let the unknown unfold.

still not sure?

This is for you, if you…

  • are new to the world of temple and want to start dipping your toes in or you love to explore with a beginners mindset again (I believe we always have something to learn).

  • tried other temple retreats or spaces, but felt like they were too intense or out of touch with the real world and you are desiring a gentler approach to your self-development.

  • have been feeling disconnected from your body, your emotions, or your pleasure, and are ready to rediscover what has been waiting inside.

  • have been craving a de-shaming space to explore and be witnessed in your truth which also includes your sensuality and sexuality.

  • are ready to meet your shadows and work with them, not against them.

  • want to invite more depth into your life, relationships and sex.

  • are willing to journey deep with your body, face your edges and say yes to the chaos that is life.

This is not for you, if you…

  • are looking for a fast-track transformation and aren’t willing to meet yourself.

  • aren’t comfortable with touch or being in close proximity to others (in a consensual way).

  • are looking for a place for quick gratification, to fuck or only care for your ego.

  • are in a current trauma process with trauma related symptoms in your body.

  • are already anticipating that you will need intense 1:1 therapeutic support and don’t have any tools to regulate and self-sooth.

  • are looking for more of a tantric experience.

  • are looking for a “sacred” temple retreat with no room for real human shit.

  • are expecting a “perfect”, relaxing experience with no bumps or discomfort. Transformation is a messy process.

What past temple-retreaters say

This retreat is crafted so intentionally, first by giving each of us the tools to anchor into the self, second with that anchor developed really play around with the curiosity.

Being in a space where everyone is mindful, active listeners, and communicative of their wants and of their own boundaries is so freeing. No performance, no people pleasing, just showing up as yourself however that comes up on the day.

It’s a balance of raw, deep emotions, respect, honoring each other, full aliveness, and lighthearted playfulness.

Being seen in my full aliveness, playfulness without overthinking is so special. It’s a truly life changing retreat.

– R. from saudi arabia

This retreat showed me exactly what humanity should feel like at all times. It taught me more about myself than weeks of self exploration could, and it allowed me the chance to connect with some of the most amazing humans I have ever met.

From start to finish - the location, food (YUM!), temple nights, workshops, facilitators, music, softness, vulnerability... it was beyond anything I could have imagined. From ecstatic dancing in the woods - one of the most magic memories I hold - to a giant cuddle puddle that I can only describe as a piece of human art, this retreat was everything I didn't know I needed from all retreats I'll attend in the future.

I am still residing on a cloud and hope to stay here forever. Every human should experience this at least once in their lifetime.

– J. from portugal

I recently had the privilege to attend a retreat led by Marry, and it was nothing short of amazing. Marry's knack for facilitating a space of self-exploration and respect for others is truly commendable.

The retreat centered around being present with oneself and understanding our deepest desires - our "fuck yes". Marry also emphasized the importance of consent, ensuring that what's a "fuck yes" for me also resonates with others. The whole experience was transformative. I learned to better understand my own needs and also respect those of others.

Marry, your guidance has been invaluable. In short, this retreat was a game-changer. If you're looking for an experience that promotes self-discovery and mutual respect, this is it. Thanks, Marry, for an unforgettable experience.

FAQ

baby

  • It depends. This retreat is specifically designed for beginners or those with limited experience. I believe we can all meet ourselves new, learn more, experience different things in the same kind of containers. But if general slow- and gentleness mean boredom for you, better stay at home.

  • Absolutely not! This retreat is completely redesigned with little similarity to the last two retreats. You can join again and have a new experience.

  • We don’t subscribe to any one spiritual dogma. This retreat is deeply human, focusing on embodiment, emotional processing, education and ritual with a little “spiritual fluff”. Spirituality is the baseline for temple but then again everyone has their unique definition of what spiritual means.

  • Absolutely, you can come solo! Many participants attend alone. If you are coming with a partner, you are welcome to explore the experience together. This can be an enriching way to deepen your bond, but know that you will also have to be open to engage individually as this is group process, not a couples retreat.

  • Look babes, we don’t discriminate. This retreat is for anyone ready to explore their authentic self, regardless of their sexual orientation. While the temple space invites exploration of connection, intimacy, and expression with humans as humans and not their gender, it is not about who you are attracted to - it is about how you relate to yourself and others. There is no pressure to engage in anything beyond your comfort zone.

  • We aim to cultivate a diverse and balanced group, but it is not something we strictly enforce. This retreat isn’t about pairing people off or sticking to traditional gender dynamics - it’s about creating a rich space where everyone, regardless of gender, feels free to express themselves authentically. Our focus is on fostering connection and trust, and that is not limited by gender.

  • If you are nervous, then this retreat is perfect for you. We are not here to push you past your boundaries. We meet you where you are, respecting your pace. Vulnerability is welcomed, not forced. We give our best to support you all the way.
